Crackdown-Release Date: 2-20-07
The demo of this is available on Xbox Live Marketplace so check it out!
I bought this game the first day that it came out because I had played the demo and had so much fun I stopped playing the games I owned. The only bad thing about the demo is that it only gives you 30 minutes to play it!!
The premise behind the game is that in the future, major cities become overrun with criminals and gangs. The police lose control and are forced to hold up in their headquarters on an island between the three different gang controlled sections of the capital. In an effort to quell the violence and regain control of the city they put a scientist who had been arrested for illegal genetic testing to work for them, creating super-cops. You are that super cop.
The great thing about this game is that it is completely open ended and, unlike some "open ended" games, it doesn't punish you for not sticking specifically to the story line. All of your abilities are upgradable through use and hidden "orbs." When you kill bad guys with firearms you get experience points towards the improvement of that attribute. When you pick up an object (almost everything in the world can be used as a weapon) and throw it at an enemy you get points towards strength which allows you to pick up larger and larger items and throw them farther.
The structure of the game is set up like this; there is a Boss of each gang who is always available to be taken on. However, there are several Generals under the Boss that are responsible for different elements of the gangs success. For example, one person might be in charge of commandeering and modifying vehicles for the gangs use. One person might be in charge of weapon creation and production, another might be responsible for recruitment, etc. You can go straight for the Boss but your chances of defeating him are reduced and the battle is much harder than if you weaken him first by taking out the Generals first.
So, overall, I highly recommend this game if you like strong action and the open-ended game play. If you are looking for a strong story line, this may not be the game for you, but it's extremely fun and addictive to play.
